What is ICD-10?ICD-10 is a clinical modification of the current coding system. It will replace the coding system that has been used for the past thirty years, ICD9-CM Volume 1 and Volume 2. Codes will grow from currently 17,000 codes to 140,000! Coding books and encoder systems will change. This will impact Physicians, Nurses, Labs, Billing Areas, Front desk HIPAA policies, Managers, Coders and Billers.
ICD-10 incorporates much greater detail and specificity. The structure and format are different but it will provide many benefits for providers, insurance payers. Implementation is mandated by US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to be compliant. The time to prepare is now!
What is ANSI 5010?
HHS has also upgraded the current ANSI 4010A1 EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) transaction sets. This is used to transfer and communicate between Doctors, Hospitals and other healthcare providers with business associates such as insurance companies about claims – status & submission, referrals and authorization, patient eligibility and insurance payments in the form of electronic remittance advice. The replacement is ANSI 5010.
It is been noted that some industry experts compare ANSI 5010 to replacing old wiring in a newly renovated home or office. The new wiring has more power and greater capacity to carry added electrical current. ICD-10 has been referred to as the stronger current which can be supported with ANSI 5010 the new wiring.
