Desde entonces, las transfusiones de sangre se han convertido en rutina en la pr\u00e1ctica m\u00e9dica.<\/p><p>Sin embargo, en el siglo XXI, nuevas investigaciones revelaron la acuciante necesidad de cambiar el enfoque de la medicina transfusional. En 2005, el hemat\u00f3logo australiano profesor James Isbister acu\u00f1\u00f3 el t\u00e9rmino Patient Blood Management (PBM), reconociendo que el \u00e9nfasis debe estar en la gesti\u00f3n y preservaci\u00f3n de la propia sangre del paciente en lugar de depender exclusivamente de los productos sangu\u00edneos. Aunque la transfusi\u00f3n de sangre es m\u00e1s segura que nunca, sigue habiendo graves riesgos para la salud. Las pruebas demuestran que los resultados de los pacientes son mejores cuando se reducen las transfusiones. Los riesgos documentados incluyen reacciones a la transfusi\u00f3n potencialmente mortales, lesi\u00f3n pulmonar aguda, cambios en el sistema inmunitario que pueden provocar un aumento de la tasa de infecciones y sobrecarga circulatoria.\" El uso inadecuado de transfusiones de sangre es una preocupaci\u00f3n com\u00fan.
